Nonwoven technology is the exciting segment of the textile industry and will be one of the most important fields in the years ahead as non woven materials penetrate many more areas now occupied predominantly by conventional textiles. Despite the maturity of some of the nonwoven technologies, their growth is expected to continue at steady rate. The technologies expected to gain importance are spunbonding, melt blowing, and spunlacing.

Non woven technology is the most modern branch of the textile industry, and it embodies both quite old and the new processing techniques and materials. Form a fairly modest beginning with only a limited variety of materials, processes, and end uses , the non woven industry has reached a status of enormous diversity. Today, non woven materials play key roles in hundreds of everyday products. From luxury automobiles to the familiar tea bag.

In the past 30 years, the non woven industry has observed a phenomenal growth mainly because of a close alliance among non woven producers, binder producer, and machinery manufactures. There are many non woven manufacturing process and products that have been developed and commercialized in the past 30 years to address a variety of end-use markets.

The ‘’non woven ‘’ has been defined in many ways. In fact, the definition of non woven material has been an area of considerable debate and discussion. Apparently, all the definitions proposed so far state in some detail what non woven are not, rather than what they are. The american standard for testing material as defined the term “non woven” as: a structure produced by bonding of or both accomplished by mechanical, chemical, thermal, or solvent means and the combination thereof. The term does not include paper or fabrics that woven, knitted, tufted or those made by wool or other felting processes.

Non woven material is essentially an assemblage of fibers held together by mechanical or chemical means, resulting in a mechanical stable self-supporting, and generally flexible, web-like structure. The most significant feature of non woven fabrics, and the one that contributes most to their economic appeal, is that the fabrics are usually made directly from raw materials in continuous production line, thus partially or completely eliminating conventional textile operations, such as carding, roving, spinning, weaving or knitting. The simplicity of fabric formation, coupled with high productivity, allows non woven to complete favorably with wovens and knits on a performance per cost basis in many industrial applications( as in packing materials). however, in fashion outer-wear apparel applications, where good drape properties, flexibility, and strength are required, non wovens have yet to gain a significant technologies advancement. Nevertheless, there has been a continuous effort through innovative manufacturing processes to develop newer non woven products that emulate the drape and flexibility of woven or knitted structure.
